The ski season is one of the longest in Austria and the twin holiday resorts of Obergurgl and Hochgurgl offer great ski-in and ski-out resort facilities and ski accommodation. Obergurgl is located down in the valley and is the larger of the 2 ski resorts, whilst Hochgurgl is higher up the mountain with ski pistes above and below the resort.

Because of the height of the ski terrain, there is absence of trees which in poor conditions can hamper visibility and much of the skiing feels like glacier skiing. Usually however the views are dramatic, with the sight of the Wildspitze (the highest mountain in Tirol) dominating the horizon. The ski terrain is expansive and covers two areas joined by the Top Express lift that runs between the Obergurgl and Hochgurgl ski areas. The lift runs nearly horizontally between the two areas and offers a chance to ski a new mountain whilst offering great views across the valleys. The skiing is best suited to the intermediate but there are nursery slopes just above Obergurgl, whilst there are great off-piste ski opportunities for the advanced skiers.

The ski resorts are well equipped for families with restrained slope-side après ski. There is night skiing, tobogganing, ice skating and snow shoe walking as well as extensive cross country skiing around the resorts.

Obergurgl and Hochgurgl are located at the upper reaches of the Oetz Valley and are well located to take advantage of the nearby ski area of Solden, which includes glacier skiing and some of the best après ski in Austria.
